Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

Skilled Trades Immigration to Canada Explained by Visa Aid

The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is a permanent residence pathway under Canada’s Express Entry system designed specifically for experienced trade workers in occupations that are in demand across Canada.

FSTP is not a shortcut to permanent residence. It is highly specific, tightly regulated, and unsuitable for many applicants who assume trade experience alone is enough.

Visa Aid helps you determine whether FSTP is genuinely viable for your trade profile before you enter the Express Entry pool.

Who the Federal Skilled Trades Program Is For

FSTP is intended for applicants who:

  • Have hands-on experience in a recognized skilled trade

  • Meet Canada’s trade classification standards

  • Can prove employment continuity and skill level

  • Meet language and admissibility requirements

General labor experience does not qualify.

Eligible Trades Under FSTP

FSTP covers specific skilled trade occupations listed under Canada’s National Occupational Classification (NOC), including but not limited to:

  • Construction trades

  • Electrical trades

  • Industrial and manufacturing trades

  • Maintenance and repair trades

  • Agriculture-related skilled trades

Your job title does not matter. Your actual duties must match the NOC description.

Core Eligibility Requirements

To qualify under FSTP, you must meet all of the following:

Work Experience

  • At least two years of full-time skilled trade experience

  • Experience must be within the last five years

  • Experience must be paid and verifiable

Job Offer or Trade Certification

You must have either:

  • A valid full-time job offer in Canada for at least one year
    or

  • A Canadian trade certificate issued by a provincial or territorial authority

This requirement blocks most applicants.

Language Requirements

  • English or French language tests are mandatory

  • Minimum benchmarks are lower than other Express Entry programs, but failure still leads to rejection

Admissibility

Applicants must meet health, security, and background requirements. Financial stability also matters.

How FSTP Works Inside Express Entry

FSTP candidates must:

  1. Create an Express Entry profile

  2. Select Federal Skilled Trades Program

  3. Receive an Invitation to Apply through a draw

  4. Submit a complete PR application after invitation

Having eligibility does not guarantee an invitation. CRS scores still matter.

Why Most FSTP Applications Fail

The most common failure reasons:

  • Incorrect trade classification

  • Inadequate proof of duties

  • No valid job offer or certification

  • Overestimated Express Entry score

  • Applying without demand analysis

Online calculators do not flag these risks.

How Visa Aid Assesses FSTP Eligibility

Visa Aid conducts:

  • Trade occupation and NOC duty analysis

  • Certification or job offer validation

  • CRS score realism check

  • Alternative pathway evaluation if FSTP is not viable

We do not recommend FSTP unless it is defensible.

Permanent Residence Outcomes

If approved:

  • You and eligible family members receive permanent residence

  • You can live and work anywhere in Canada

  • You may later qualify for Canadian citizenship

If refused, future immigration applications may be affected.

Reliable and Authentic Guidance

Visa Aid relies only on:

  • Official IRCC program requirements

  • NOC and trade authority standards

  • Current Express Entry policies

We do not inflate success chances or push unsuitable profiles.

Decide with Facts, Not Assumptions

FSTP is powerful for the right trade profile and a dead end for everyone else.

Book a consultation with Visa Aid to confirm whether the Federal Skilled Trades Program is realistic for your experience or if a better pathway exists.
